TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Community activist Nancy Miller announced today that she is running for Seat 3 on the Tallahassee City Commission currently held by Debbie Lightsey, who recently announced that she will be not be seeking re-election. Miller is a long-time resident of Tallahassee, self-employed urban planning consultant and former small business owner.

With a long list of public-service experience, Miller has a range of expertise on economic, environmental and social issue affecting Tallahassee. She currently serves on multiple Commission-appointed committees, including the Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Commission, Blueprint 2000 Citizens’ Advisory Committee and the Leon County Water Resources Citizens Advisory Committee.

“The City of Tallahassee faces some significant challenges – shrinking revenues, higher unemployment and unpredictable energy supplies – and I’m ready and willing to address every single one of those issues,” said Miller. “I am dedicated to the City of Tallahassee and its residents and I am committed to making this community the very best city in the state of Florida.”

Most recently, Miller has worked as a freelance consultant for Wendy Grey Land Use Planning where she was responsible for the development of Evaluation and Appraisal Report (EAR) based amendments for cities and counties throughout Florida. Miller holds a Master of Science degree in Urban Planning from Florida State University.

Additionally, Miller is the current Project Coordinator for the widely-known and award-winning TAPP (“Think About Personal Pollution”) campaign. Since 2003, Miller has overseen all elements of the multi-faceted public education and outreach program promoting prevention of non-point source (NPS) water pollution. Through this public-private partnership, she has worked closely with government officials and private partners to ensure a successful campaign.

Miller also is a founding member of the Economic and Environmental Consensus Committee (EECC), which authored the Blueprint 2000 and Beyond report. As a direct result of the report, a successful sales tax referendum was passed in Leon County in November 2000 which currently funds road and storm water improvements, parks and greenways.

Born and raised in the small town of Asheville, N.C., Miller came to Tallahassee in 1985 to begin her career as co-owner and office manager of Lightspeed Marketing, Inc. Miller’s modest roots lend to her understanding of the role of small businesses and their contribution and importance to the vitality of a community.

The primary election for City Commission Seat 3 is Aug. 24, with the general election scheduled for Nov. 2. For more information, to contribute or volunteer for Miller’s campaign, contact her at (850) 445-4026 or nancycaire@comcast.net; or visit her profile page on Facebook.
